A shadow slinked across the short grass rippling silver under the moonlight, moving with notable slowness but still as smooth as steel.
Her icy eyes flicked over the lake sprawled serenely before her, smooth as glass. It mirrored the lady moon and her stars, an earthly version of heaven.
She found the ache in her lungs and the pain in her body had subsided with the chilled night air. The wolf-dog's upper arm was still sore, but she was beginning to feel otherwise alright. She was doing her best to ignore the pain anyway, as everytime she let her mind wander to it, she again saw smoke clouding her eyes, fire burning her very breath, and her friend Reverie, who now lay dying in the Hollow.
She came upon the edge of the water suddenly, one creamy paw already stretched out over the mirror-like water before Valentina saw its ghostly counter-part shining below and caught herself. She stopped and brought her foot back, setting it down gingerly in the grass on the bank and leaned forward to peer into the water.
Her own face looked up at her, her light eyes like quick silver. Her red fur looked black against the stars and her cream fur was pale and glowed in comparison, her sculpted wolfish ears slacked and lifeless.
Valentina had never seen herself before. Even though her reflection looked as though she were on the otherside of a rainy window, she was amazed to see that she looked how she felt; somber and guilty.
She blamed Reverie's situation on herself. It's all my fault, she thought. If I had just stayed in the Hollow...but oh no, I had to go off to find something to do, instead of just staying there. But then...Reverie and I would still have been enemies, right? Well I'd rather have that than her dead! If I didn't have to be all high and mighty and act like a rebel all the time, we wouldn't gotten in a fight in the first place! I'm so STUPID! Just a wild animal who's mistakes others have to pay for! Reverie doesn't deserve this. I should never have come here...then everyone would still be alright. Maybe I should leave before I hurt anyone else...
She waded slowly out into the water on her slender legs, shivering once at the cold but shocking feel of the lake on her body. Her chest was barely an inch above the surface of the water, her plume swayed over the water.
She threw head back and let a long, eerie cry. The howl was a purely wolven sound, not one of those scratchy husky-attempts. It was high and then low and wavering, like a siren's cry, it was dark and beautiful, echoing across the water. She continued to stare at the glimmering stars, even as her howl faded, lost in pain and the utmost feeling of dismay.
